More than 40 years after his studies, David decided to go back to learning French for pleasure. And what better way to do it than in immersion, learning French directly in France with courses for adults and a local host family!

David’s testimonial:

“My name is David Lightman and I’m from the United States.”

“I love the sound of French and learned it when I was in high school and university. After more than 40 years, I decided to get back into it for fun.”

“I live in a small town in Pennsylvania called Lewisburg. For the past few months, I’ve been working at Bucknell University with a teaching assistant who came from Bordeaux. She was the one who told me about the Alliance Française French courses for adults, saying that it was a good school and that Bordeaux was a wonderful city.”

A highly enriching immersion experience for adults

“First, I was picked up at the train station by my host family, who then took me downtown to show me around. I fell in love with the city straight away!

I had a wonderful experience at the Alliance Française! My teacher was fabulous, one of the best teachers I’ve had in all my years of training. And I couldn’t recommend the school more highly!

There’s a French expression I’ve learned which is “retournons à nos moutons” to get back on topic. And it’s true that I often tend to spread myself a bit thin during lessons, so it’s an expression I often use.”

Living with a French host family

“I chose the host family option and stayed with Hélène who was wonderful. She picked me up at the station and was really welcoming. She showed me around the city and how to get from her house to the school. I also spent a day with her at Dune du Pylat and Arcachon. She was extremely warm and welcoming! It’s a great experience to live with a host family.”

A French learning experience for adults to match

“To describe the school I’d say ‘challenging’. It’s a real challenge every day, but I felt I was at the right level. We don’t want to be in a level that’s too simple, and we also don’t want to be in a level that’s beyond us, where we’re going to get lost every day in class. So I think I was at an ideal level where it kept me going without frustrating me to the point of giving up.

Finally, I would say that the Alliance Française team is really very friendly, very welcoming and always ready to simplify the learning process.”
